The Phoenixi have been keeping very busy. Last Sunday they participated in the Celebra Health Festival for You and Your Family sponsored by La Alianza Hispana of Boston. The Festival provided health screenings and information for many Hispanic families. There the Phoenixi let people know about the project and the Greater Boston Peace Walk they are having in August. They also gave many shoulder massages and demonstrated a dance made of DahnMuDo movements. DahnMuDo is the healing martial art taught in Dahn Yoga and DahnMuDo centers worldwide. The mayor of Boston saw the demonstration and took this picture with the Phoenixi:
The Dahn Yoga centers of Boston also had a booth at the Health Festival. They distributed holistic healing tips and held a raffle for free yoga memberships. Janet Collazzo, a Dahn Healer who works for La Alianza Hispana and who helped to organize the event, introduced the Dahn Instructors present to two police officers on the Hispanic Crime Task Force. They saw the Phoenixi’s demonstration and would like to work with Dahn Yoga in the future.
The Health Festival was an inspiring opportunity to connect with the community and other health-focused organizations. We were all very excited to reach out to people. I spent some time at the Dahn Yoga booth that day and many people attending the festival were receptive and interested in trying yoga. The Phoenixi in their bright red T-shirts spread fun, fresh, vibrant, positive energy everywhere.

The Phoenix Project is the big excitement this summer amongst Dahn organizations. Sponsored by the Dahn Foundation, it awakens the awareness and inner passion of young adults and shows them how they can then take action for what they want. Throughout this summer in Boston, MA, different groups of “phoenixi” are receiving body and mind training and are participating in various community projects. This blog will keep the online community abreast of their activities. One of their ongoing outreach projects is with the Summer Urban Program (SUP). The SUP run camps for kids through the Phillips Brooks Housing Association. The Phoenix Project has worked with five camps in different Boston neighborhoods, especially the one in Brye. Last Wednesday, phoenixi helped bring kids together from Brye and Franklin, two neighborhoods that normally would have trouble with each other. They broke down barriers between these kids using a dance of DahnMuDo martial art movements. They also taught the kids how to feel their own ki (or chi) energy, as well as that of another person. The kids had a lot of fun and became quiet and peaceful. They were surprised they could feel the energy of their body. The camp counselors were amazed that the kids followed the instructors so unusually well. These techniques are often used in Dahn classes and workshops. When they are taught to people with little experience, you can easily see how they can help create a more healthy, happy. and peaceful world.
A new Dahn Yoga DVD will be coming out in October 2007. Produced by Healing Society, a publishing department of the Dahn community, and the Dahn Foundation, a Dahn non-profit outreach organization, it will demonstrate exercises addressing Multiple Schlerosis (MS) and related conditions. Dahn Instructor Dawn Quaresima and Cathy Downie, a Dahn practitioner who recovered from a 13-year battle with MS, will guide viewers through a series of stretches, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques to improve balance, clarity, and energy. This focus on a specific illness is not new to Dahn. Its first student was a stroke survivor who recovered significantly from the practice. Even this year, one Dahn member who could not walk after a stroke recovered her ability to walk with assistance after doing extensive healing and taking the Shim Sung workshop. Hopefully this DVD will help people living with physically challenging conditions, even when they cannot come to a Dahn Center.
Ilchi Lee Days are beginning to pop up in towns and cities across the United States. The most recent are coming soon. Denver, CO will have one on July 25 and Houston, TX will have another on August 28th. Proclamations for Ilchi Lee Day have also been issued by Cambridge, Massachusetts (September 19, 2001), Atlanta, Georgia (October 28, 2002), and Santa Fe, New Mexico (April 10, 2007). This year the State of New Mexico designated him an Ambassador for Goodwill.
So why have an Ilchi Lee Day? Ilchi Lee is the founder of Dahn Yoga and an internationally renowned educator. He is one of those people who dedicate their lives to bringing health, happiness, and peace to the earth. People who have benefitted from his endeavors want to recognize him for what he has done. This form of recognition makes many others aware of him and his efforts. It can also make us think about what we can do ourselves to make the world a better place.
